It has been a busy few months, both in my business life and my personal life. God is good and we look forward to what He has in store for us in this 2012 year!

I have done a number of maternity sessions (will post more on them later). And some commercial work (which I love to do and have done little of since becoming a mom 13 years ago!) I will write more about that in a later post as well. Nonetheless, I have been a terrible blogger these last few months. I do regularly post to my business Facebook page and those posts will end up as tweets on this blog. Feel free to “like” my business page where you can see those posts when they are made.

I am still looking for Newborn Models! We have many new props that I am eager to photograph with a precious little one. Do you know someone who is expecting or just had a new baby? Newborn portraits are best when the baby is 1-2 weeks old. Please have them call me – 205-807-1223 or Send Mail to schedule a session. Note: It is our policy to keep your contact information confidential. Your information will never to given to or sold to another party. Nor will you be hit with spam.

We will soon be publishing our first “Images By ‘Missy’” newsletter! I am excited! We will have it in pdf form. Current clients will get a copy via email and if you would like a copy sent to you, please fill out this contact form. Again, please note:It is our policy to keep your contact information confidential. Your information will never to given to or sold to another party. Nor will you be hit with spam. That is why I would prefer for those who are interested in the newsletter fill out the following subscription form.

Now on to the good stuff! Photographs!

I have photographed this family since the daughter was an infant! I first took their portraits on Baby Dedication Sunday. At that time, I took infants and family portraits of all the babies & their families who were being dedicated at our church. They are a real joy to be around! The dad used to be a reservist and when the mom was expecting the 2nd child (boy), he was called off to Kuwait. God is good an protected him for the time he was serving in the Middle East. In fact, the military sent him home for the birth of his son! The children adore each other. Such a credit to both their Mom and Dad!

Back in film days, I made ‘Hand Tinted’ of the portraits of the children.

For those of us who love the “Hand-Tinted” look, there are several papers that the ’Digital Hand Tints’ look good printed on.

What can I say, boys will be boys and dads come pretty close. It is really fun to catch moments like these.

He perked up for a few more… LOL!

These last 3 will make a beautiful wall display. Especially with the large wall portrait of the whole family!

We are currently booking for Spring Portrait Sessions. Call ASAP to get the time slot that you prefer. If you would like to be included in our next newsletter email, please fill out the form listed in the beginning of this post. We are also looking for newborn models! If you know someone who is expecting or just had a baby, have them call me~205-807-1223.

This has been around for years, but I have not seen it in a while. I just had to post it. Fun read and so TRUE! Enjoy!

Birmingham Alabama

First you must learn to pronounce the city’s name. It’s ‘Bur-min-ham’.

Driving Information:

Burminham has its own version of traffic rules. The truck with the loudest
exhaust goes next at a four-way stop. The truck with the biggest tires goes
after that. Note: Blue-haired ladies driving anything have the right-of-way
anytime.

To find anything in the city, it is required that you know where
Malfunction Junction is, which is the Alpha and Omega, the beginning and
the end. It may be one of only two ‘cloverleaf formation’ interchanges in
the world. We invented it and only one other city was stupid enough to
implement it again, Atlanta — making them only a wee bit dumber than we
are.

The morning rush hour is from 6:00 to 10:00. The evening rush hour is from
3:00 to 7:00. Friday’s rush hour starts Thursday morning. If the term
‘merging delays’ is ever used by the person reporting the traffic, even in
passing, call in to work and tell them that you will be at least 30 minutes
late regardless of where you are in your commute.

If you actually stop at a yellow light, you will be (at the very least)
rear-ended, cussed out, and possibly shot. This applies to male and female
drivers alike.

You must know that ‘I-459,’ ‘I-59,’ ‘I-20,’ and ‘I-65′ are the same road.
They just loop around, cutting in and out of each other’s path. We think
this was a ploy utilized to confuse outsiders and discourage visitors after
the War of Northern Aggression.

Always, always, always, find out if it is a race or football weekend before
you get on any of these highways to travel somewhere. If it is a race or
football weekend, stay home. You won’t be pleasantly going anywhere else.

Construction is a permanent fixture in Burminham. The barrels are moved
around in the middle of the night to make the next day’s driving a little
more interesting.

If someone actually has their turn signal on, wave them over to the
shoulder immediately to let them know — you can be sure it was
‘accidentally activated’.

The minimum acceptable speed on ‘I-65′ (see above) is 85 mph. Anything less
is considered downright sissy.

This is also Alabama ‘s state-highway-sponsored version of NASCAR –
especially during rush hour (see above) and everyone in the city is driving
at once, bumper-to-bumper. If you are in the left lane and only going 70 in
a 55-65 zone, you are considered a road hazard and will be ‘flipped a
bird’ accordingly.

Do not gawk at the woman in the car beside you in traffic who is applying
make-up, drinking a Diet Coke, smoking a Marlboro and maintaining a steady
speed of 85 mph on I-65 in rush hour traffic. If she is coming from north
of Burminham, she might be packing. If she is coming from south of
Burminham, she IS packing and is not afraid to use it.

Weather Information:

If it’s 110 degrees, Thanksgiving could be next weekend. If it’s 10-20
degrees and sleeting or snowing, then watch out. Burminham residents
consider this ‘demolition derby’ day and will be all over the roads
(frontways, sideways, etc). Please proceed with caution, as you could be
the next target.

Seasonal Information:

If you stick to the seats in your vehicle, it is Spring.

If you need to let the car ‘get some air’ while standing next to it with
the doors open for a minute before you can stick your upper body inside to
crank it and get the air going, it is Summer.

If you are sweating even with the windows down, driving 55 mph, it is Fall.

If you finally turn the AC off and roll your windows up, it is Winter.

General Information:

Do not ever speak during the song ‘ Sweet Home Alabama ‘ unless it is to
sing along with the lyrics. This is a form of heresy and will erupt in a
brawl if everyone doesn’t show ‘proper respect’ to the band who gave us
Free Bird. This is especially true if alcohol is present (notice I didn’t
say ‘sold at this event,’ but ‘present’).

Yes, we know that Vulcan is mooning the entire city. It’s not that funny to
us anymore and by now we’re used to it.

If you ask someone for a ‘coke,’ they will often ask you, ‘What kind?’ This
is not a trick question. Tell them what you want: Sprite, Dr. Pepper, Root
Beer, etc., it is all ‘coke’.

All tea is sweet. If it’s not sweet, you are in a Chinese restaurant or
have crossed the Mason-Dixon Line .

Possums sleep in the middle of the road with their feet in the air.

There are 5,000 types of snakes on earth and 4,998 of them live in Alabama

There are 10,000 types of spiders. All 10,000 live in Alabama, plus acouple no one’s seen before.

Iced tea is appropriate for all meals and you start drinking it when you’re two. We do like a little tea with our sugar!

Backwards and forwards means ‘I know everything about you.

DJeet is actually a phrase meaning ‘Did you eat?’

You don’t have to wear a watch because it doesn’t matter what time it is.You work until you’re done or it’s too dark to see.

You don’t PUSH buttons, you MASH them.

You measure distance in minutes.

You’ll probably have to switch from ‘heat’ to ‘A/C’ in the same day

All the festivals across the state are named after a fruit, vegetable, grain, insect or animal.

You install security lights on your house and garage and leave both unlocked.

Last Sunday, my family, a friend of my daughter and I went to see 1925 Phantom of the Opera (black & white silent film version) at the Alabama Theater. I love this movie and I love seeing at the Alabama Theater accompanied by The Mighty Wurlitzer organ.

I took my trusty G11 with me as it fits in my purse and also does video.

We sat in my favorite seats. Front row, 2nd level. I have always felt these are the best seats in theater. Others prefer the wings (box) seats on the 2nd level.

Mom, this Phantom’s not Hot!

OK, so Lon Chaney is not Gerry Butler!

LOL. I explained to the girls that this is one of the first horror films ever made and the Phantom is not supposed to be “HOT”. He is supposed to be horrifying. The girls then said the movie was mislabeled. It should be a comedy! Honestly, they really enjoyed the show and the performance of the Mighty Wurlitzer. Here is the video of the beginning of the performance. It is a little long at first, just bare with it. The last 2-3 minutes will be worth it!

Thomas Helms does a fantastic job on the Wurlitzer.

I hope that you enjoyed this post. Check out the the up and coming features at the Alabama Theater. And remember, The Phantom of the Opera will be showing at the historic theater in October next year. Fun and great entertainment for the whole family!

Portrait photography using the sun…

I am not what you would call a “shoot into the sun” type of portrait photographer. I think when I first started learning the craft, I experimented a good bit and with a good deal of success. And also w/not much success. In film days, paying for film & processing and paying for classes, an expensive lesson to learn.

I love sunset and sunrise landscapes. I love portraits made (correctly) in sunset and sunrise landscapes. And with the subjects properly lit.

Last week I was photographing a cross country meet. And my spot was less than what you would call ‘ideal’. Yep, I would be shooting into the sun. Not a plan for me to move to another spot either. So I chose to make the best of it. Turned out to be some of my best action work. I was pleased w/the results.

Shooting into the sun is a tricky thing. You have to know your camera. Images are best when set manually. And in this case, better to have a silhouette than a blown out sky. I think the mother of this boy will be thrilled with this photograph of her son. Now all it needs is ad copy to go with it! LOL! Almost all the photos I took that day look like this, but I like best how the sun peeks through the crook of his arm.

Loved taking those photos that day!

I am in need of a “Newborn” model. Baby needs to be 5-10 days old. If you know someone or if you are about to have a baby. Please pass my phone number or email along to them. Even if you have just had a baby, please give me a call. I have tons of new props I am eager to try out. Thanks so much! 205-807-1223 or Missy@imagesbymissy.com
