I did not know that there was such a thing until this past week. Yes, there is a National Dog Walking Week!
What is National Walk Your Dog Week?
Good question! ”It is a campaign aimed to promote community involvement by showing how your dog represents your hometown and interests.” And I plan to share with you how my dog does just that. :-)
The Leash Daily posted this toon recently. I love it! Go “Like” them on Facebook. Our 4 legged furbaby understands code as well! :-)
Our community is very “pet rescue” conscious. Though our Charlie was not adopted through one of our local humane societies, we do consider him a “rescue”. Read more of our story in this blog post and you will understand what I mean. Like most dogs, he loves to ride around in the car, go for walks, meet new people and sniff out new smells. He is also very misfit looking. A poodle we got off of craigslist (and I actually gave money for him! Not much, but a few $$$) he is not American Standard by any stretch of the imagination. Despite issues that we have had with him, he has been re-socialized, trained and has adapted well as a member of our family.
For many years, our daughter wanted a dog. She would plead for a dog that she could just run and play with. We talked about allergies, training, house breaking and all the responsibilities that go along with dog ownership. Oh, I probably failed to mention, at the time we had two birds. An African Grey and a Budgie. 2 1/2 years ago I gave in. I even said, “wait until Friday and I will look around for a dog for you. Actually, I meant to say we will start looking for a dog……” Friday morning my sweet daughter wakes me up at 6:00 AM. She hands me a piece of paper with a number on it and then said, “This lady told me to have you call her. She has a poodle for sale….” The child has waken up early, got on the internet, searched out different forums, etc and found her a hypoallergenic dog. On a craigslist site. Being a good mama (maybe just a crazy mama) I called the lady and agreed to meet her so that my daughter and I could check out this dog.
For my daughter it was love at first site. In the above photo, we had already had him a few weeks. The lady said he was a miniature poodle. His tail was not docked and he had been shaved to the skin. Mouth looked all funny and he had a horrible under bite.
We took him home. He was covered in fleas. We learned that he hated being bathed. Do a google search on poodles. They are water retriever dogs. They should love water! In very short amount of time we discover that this dog has been abused. And at the time he was a little over 1 year old and still not house broken. Terrified of men. (It took a while for him to warm up to my husband, now they are best buds.) We were wondering about the funny looking jaw, the vet confirmed at one time it had been broken and healed on it’s own. All I can say is, we do not know what he when through before we got him. But he has a better life now.
His hair grows quickly like most poodles, very thick. As his hair began to grow out, he did start looking more like a poodle.
He got kicked out of 2 grooming shops before I found someone who would work with him. In fact the groomer recently told me “He has come a long way. You wouldn’t know he was the same dog!”
Being a professional photographer in Birmingham AL, I had to take a quick “before” and “after” grooming portrait of him. He really cleans up well! I love his little amber eyes and pink nose.
He can’t stand to have his feet shaved so we just get a peek a boo trim on them.
Update on Charlie
We have had Charlie almost 2 1/2 years now. He is the sweetest dog. And very smart! Anything I try to teach him, he catches on and learns it. He doesn’t like jumping through hoops though. That is something we will have to work on a little bit more. Typical poodle behavior. Almost 3 1/2 years old and still full of energy. He jumps like he has springs on the the bottom of his feet. Loves to go for walks!
Charlie’s favorite things to do:
- Sit around in a sweater. Yes, this dog loves to wear sweaters!
- Go for long walks
- spend time with his favorite human (my daughter)
- Be my shadow (when my daughter isn’t around)
- Fetch (Oh I said that already)
- Take naps with my husband (his buddy)
- watch TV
- Watch any TV show that has an animal on it
Favorite movie: Hotel for Dogs
This little ‘imperfect’ dog has turned out to be the ‘perfect’ addition to our family!
