Portrait photography using the sun…
I am not what you would call a “shoot into the sun” type of portrait photographer. I think when I first started learning the craft, I experimented a good bit and with a good deal of success. And also w/not much success. In film days, paying for film & processing and paying for classes, an expensive lesson to learn.
I love sunset and sunrise landscapes. I love portraits made (correctly) in sunset and sunrise landscapes. And with the subjects properly lit.
Last week I was photographing a cross country meet. And my spot was less than what you would call ‘ideal’. Yep, I would be shooting into the sun. Not a plan for me to move to another spot either. So I chose to make the best of it. Turned out to be some of my best action work. I was pleased w/the results.

Shooting into the sun is a tricky thing. You have to know your camera. Images are best when set manually. And in this case, better to have a silhouette than a blown out sky. I think the mother of this boy will be thrilled with this photograph of her son. Now all it needs is ad copy to go with it! LOL! Almost all the photos I took that day look like this, but I like best how the sun peeks through the crook of his arm.
Loved taking those photos that day!
I am in need of a “Newborn” model. Baby needs to be 5-10 days old. If you know someone or if you are about to have a baby. Please pass my phone number or email along to them. Even if you have just had a baby, please give me a call. I have tons of new props I am eager to try out. Thanks so much! 205-807-1223 or Missy@imagesbymissy.com
