Focus on Autism

There are several causes, organizations and charities that we love and support with our studio through donations, pro bono work and community service.  April is the month for Autism Awareness.  Our studio joins other studios and photographers all over the country in a community service event that we call “Focus on Autism”. We set aside one Saturday in the month of April to take portraits of those living with Autism.  The sessions are complimentary and include an 8×10 to those who participate.

Some Facts About Autism:

  • Recent studies have revealed that 1 in every 80 children have a form of autism
  • One in every 54 boys has autism
  • These figures seem to be on the rise
  •  Autism is a genetic disorder (and still some debate, but most of my clients agree)
  • Children are being diagnosed sooner

We understand the difficulties involved with photographing many of those living with autism and know how to work around them.  This year we are offering the option of photographing not just the child or adult living with autism, but the whole family!  Sessions will be about 20-30 minutes in length and here at our residential studio.  If the weather is agreeable we will have the option of taking portraits in a setting outside.  And we will still have the option of the studio. Many of our Focus on Autism participants allow me to spotlight them on my blog and share their stories.  We hope to do that again this year.  Here are a few links to the blog posts from last years participants. Autism Spotlight Mr. ‘G’ and January Promotions

One of the most wonderful experiences that we had last year was photographing children living with Autism.  We participated with a group of professional photographers from all over the country in Focus on Autism.

We sat aside a day in April (the month we focus on autism awareness) to focus only on those living with Autism.  Each child/person photographed are featured on our blog and will be featured, at some point on a national level.

Handsome Mr. ‘G’ came all happy and full of smiles.  I have never seen a child so happy!!!

In his mother’s words:

“Mr. ‘G’ was born 2 years ago, happy heavy boy.  9 pounds and 5 ounces!!!  WOW!  His first word, “aqua” (Spanish for water) and that was when he was 9 months old.  I was already concerned about the fact that he would not turn or respond when his name was called.  The pediatrician said that it was OK as some kids take more time than others.

He turned 1 year old and was not even crawling.  The doctor said that …”he is a little chubby…”  and that it might take a little longer for him than for other kids.  I told the doctor that I wanted him to be referred to a physical therapy.  At 18 months, Mr. ‘G’ began to walk.  Or rather “waddle”, but still was not talking other then the one word, “aqua”.  He did not point, grunt, make baby or babbling sounds, nothing.  And he still was not responding to the call of his name, clapping, touching, etc. (other means of getting a child’s attention) in any way.

I think God has a mission for me (and family) and my son is teaching me patience.  I was chosen to take care of him and show him the world!  His name, “G….” means “Strength of God”.  Is that a coincidence???  Who can tell!!!???

Our experience with Mr. ‘G’ was wonderful!  A very happy precious little boy who seemed full of wonder.  As typical with many autistic children, unresponsive to any communication.   But we could see excitement and cheerfulness in him.  What a joy he must be to his family!

E’s mom shares their story, and if you are a parent, guardian or grandparent of a child living with Autism, I am sure much of this story will be very familiar to you.

E was my first child and I had no idea he was different. He was beautiful, tiny, and perfect. He was a fussy baby but hit all his milestones. Our only problem with him was eating. He could not stand the texture of foods! He grew into a precocious child with adorable little quirks. He liked to arrange all his blocks and toys into perfect little lines. He had a laundry basket that he’d fill with the most useless junk – post-it notes, receipts, brochures, toys, socks, whatever he could get his hands on. He’d keep that basket with him and would know if anything was missing. He flapped his arms around like a litlte bird. Being our first child, we had no idea that this wasn’t normal development. We just assumed that these were his own little adorable quirks!

We didn’t know anyone else with small children at the time and had never heard of autism. It wasn’t until he was 3 that the differences became obvious. At that point, we had to put him into a daycare facility due to work schedules. We picked out a great place with a good ratio of kids to teachers, video cameras, key codes to enter, the works. It wasn’t long before the daycare operator began calling us to report trouble with him. It bewildered us to hear these reports of kicking, defiance, and lack of cooperation. One day she brought us in and had us observe him on the monitors so she could point out the behaviors and let us see how different it was from the other children. We sat and watched as the other kids played a game together. E would not join them but played happily in a corner of the room on his own. The teachers asked him to join the group for centers, and he refused and screamed when they tried to prod him that direction. They continued without him and he never even glanced to see what the other kids were doing. At nap time, the teacher had to physically place him on his mat. He refused and kicked her in the stomach. While all the other kids ate their lunches, he only picked up the beige foods. We had no idea he was so unable to interact with others and had no interest in his peers. He wanted absolutely nothing to do with them. Even then, it didn’t hit home for sure until a psychologist met with us. The signs that she went over all clicked. E never played with imaginary things. He never once picked up a block and pretended it was a phone. He never played as though something was alive. When presented with a dollhouse and family, he would only play with the furniture and house. He looked me and his Father in the eyes, but would not meet anyone else’s eyes. His tantrums, his hitting himself, inability to potty train, food adversions, noise aversion, hand flapping – all these things that we thought were just the terrible twos or quirks of his own, turned out to be symptoms of his autism.

outdoor family photography

Until then, I had never heard of Autism. Within months of diagnosis, we were able to get him on medications, speech, occupational, and physical therapies that helped him become the high functioning boy he is today. It scares me to think that if that daycare owner had not been aware and noticed the signs, he would be so much worse off now for lack of that early intervention. I certainly wasn’t aware. Today, he’s a bouncy, exuberant, super-verbal child with a variety of interests. Sure, he’s still a bit quirky to most folks, but he’s able to have his own life now and be somewhat self-sufficient. We now have hopes that he could succeed after school and into adulthood on his own. If his story and his picture can help spread the word, I hope that many many more can become aware so that more children can be helped sooner and give them the best chance at a successful life.

Early intervention is a major key in Autism.  How blessed this family is to have such a wonderful daycare director, willing to do more than “Just her job!”

Focus on Autism Spotlight

Focus on Autism

This past April, we joined a group of photographers across the country for an event called “Focus on Autism”.  As a service to the community we provided complimentary sessions to include an 8×10 of anyone living with autism who wanted their portrait taken.  April being Autism Awareness month we wanted to take that opportunity to promote awareness of autism and offer our services to those living with autism.

Autism is a disorder that I personally was not aware of until just a few years ago in my late 30′s.  I cannot believe that I lived almost 40 years and had never heard the syndrome.  I met a man, who was/is about my age.  He was related to my cousin by marriage.  Before he arrived, my cousin had ‘prepared’ us just in case anything “awkward” was said or done.  This gentleman showed up in a classic car that had been completely restored… by him.  I am not into cars so I cannot tell you if it was a Camaro, Firebird or Mustang.   I do remember it was a 60′s era car.  This man had taken this car apart piece by piece, cleaned, repaired, replaced and basically had a perfectly ‘new’ showroom conditioned car.  As I stood on my cousin’s porch watching all my male cousins, uncles and our husbands ohhh and ahh over this car, I remember thinking “There are at least 2 masters degrees and 1 phd and none of them can restore a car to look like that! Incredible!”

Later I began to be more aware of children & adults with autism at church, school and in my community.  Autism is on the rise and experts are still not fully sure about the cause.

Today I want to share with you the story of Mr. J.  A very smart young man who wanted to participate in our Focus on Autism and came to us to have his portrait made.

Birmingham photographers, childrens photographer in birmingham alabama

Mr. J’s favorite subject is science.  And I bet he is very good at it and makes good grades.  His favorite hobby is horseback riding.  Working with a horse centers his focus and concentration.  J also knows that he has to be tender to the horse and is also learning the responsibility of caring for the animal.

He is very well mannered which really impressed us.

And did not mind posing for the camera one bit. :-)

Young Mr. J’s story as told by his mom…

…J is our twelve year old son. He was diagnosed with PDD on the Autism spectrum when he was two and a half. At that time he hardly spoke. Mostly he just screamed and his behavior was out of control. We had a hard time finding any child care due to his behavior. We have come so far and I am so thankful. God used J and his behavior to bring me to my lowest point so I would rely on Him and not myself. I hadn’t accepted Christ until then.

He (God) has used J to speak to so many at our church as well. J was baptized on a Wednesday night and I have never seen it so crowded on a Wed. night. They even shot a video about serving in the church and the impact on others using J’s “buddy”,  A. In our church we have many special needs children and they often will pair that child with an adult buddy to help them during Sunday school. A was J’s Awana’s teacher when he was 3 then volunteered to be his buddy. When J was baptized, he insisted that A “bababatize” him.  J wanted to do the talking on the video shoot and even though it was somewhat hard to understand him I heard that there was hardly a dry eye in the house. He is proof that the Gospel message is so simple to understand. J is very concrete and if you say something is so, then it is. We still have our bad days but I can’t believe how far we have come. He just returned from his first Boy Scout camp out without his brother or Dad. He rides horses and loves helping on his riding instructor’s farm. His progress continues to amaze me!

I cried when I first read this note/testimony from J’s mom.  God has already used J to glorify Himself.  I fully believe that He will continue to use J.

I look forward to seeing what else God has in store for Mr. J.

In the future, we will be spotlighting more children living with autism and sharing their stories.  Please bookmark this page or “like” our facebook page so you will not miss one!

Focus on Autism Sessions

Focus on Autism

Our Focus on Autism event was a great success!  If you were not able to participate this year, we will be doing this event again next year in the month of April.

April is Autism Awareness month and as a community service we offer complimentary sessions and give away one 8×10 portrait from each session.  Many of our participants also share their stories and gave me permission to share with you on this blog in addition to being featured on the Focus on Autism website (currently under construction).  These stories are to be a source of encouragement to those who are living with Autism and to families of those living with Autism.

Over the next few weeks I will be sharing with you the stories of these precious children:

Mr. J-1…. Who loves math and fencing.  More of his story by clicking here.

When you meet someone, adult or child, with autism, you have met one person with autism.  They are all different, gifted and a precious creation of God.  I feel privileged to be allowed to share with you each of their stories.

“Focus on Autism” is a group of professional photographers, from all over the country who set aside one Saturday in April (Autism Awareness Month) to photograph those living with autism.  Our group was founded by Melissa Tash, a Professional Photographer in Huntsville, Alabama.  Inspired by her own little one living with ASD, she is currently setting up a website as a resource for parents, caregivers and those living with Autism.  Each of the stories we feature here will eventually be featured on the national website.  These stories are to offer hope and encouragement to the parents, care givers and those living with Autism.

Stay tuned over the next few weeks as we have some awesome stories to share with you!
