E’s mom shares their story, and if you are a parent, guardian or grandparent of a child living with Autism, I am sure much of this story will be very familiar to you.

E was my first child and I had no idea he was different. He was beautiful, tiny, and perfect. He was a fussy baby but hit all his milestones. Our only problem with him was eating. He could not stand the texture of foods! He grew into a precocious child with adorable little quirks. He liked to arrange all his blocks and toys into perfect little lines. He had a laundry basket that he’d fill with the most useless junk – post-it notes, receipts, brochures, toys, socks, whatever he could get his hands on. He’d keep that basket with him and would know if anything was missing. He flapped his arms around like a litlte bird. Being our first child, we had no idea that this wasn’t normal development. We just assumed that these were his own little adorable quirks!

We didn’t know anyone else with small children at the time and had never heard of autism. It wasn’t until he was 3 that the differences became obvious. At that point, we had to put him into a daycare facility due to work schedules. We picked out a great place with a good ratio of kids to teachers, video cameras, key codes to enter, the works. It wasn’t long before the daycare operator began calling us to report trouble with him. It bewildered us to hear these reports of kicking, defiance, and lack of cooperation. One day she brought us in and had us observe him on the monitors so she could point out the behaviors and let us see how different it was from the other children. We sat and watched as the other kids played a game together. E would not join them but played happily in a corner of the room on his own. The teachers asked him to join the group for centers, and he refused and screamed when they tried to prod him that direction. They continued without him and he never even glanced to see what the other kids were doing. At nap time, the teacher had to physically place him on his mat. He refused and kicked her in the stomach. While all the other kids ate their lunches, he only picked up the beige foods. We had no idea he was so unable to interact with others and had no interest in his peers. He wanted absolutely nothing to do with them. Even then, it didn’t hit home for sure until a psychologist met with us. The signs that she went over all clicked. E never played with imaginary things. He never once picked up a block and pretended it was a phone. He never played as though something was alive. When presented with a dollhouse and family, he would only play with the furniture and house. He looked me and his Father in the eyes, but would not meet anyone else’s eyes. His tantrums, his hitting himself, inability to potty train, food adversions, noise aversion, hand flapping – all these things that we thought were just the terrible twos or quirks of his own, turned out to be symptoms of his autism.

Until then, I had never heard of Autism. Within months of diagnosis, we were able to get him on medications, speech, occupational, and physical therapies that helped him become the high functioning boy he is today. It scares me to think that if that daycare owner had not been aware and noticed the signs, he would be so much worse off now for lack of that early intervention. I certainly wasn’t aware. Today, he’s a bouncy, exuberant, super-verbal child with a variety of interests. Sure, he’s still a bit quirky to most folks, but he’s able to have his own life now and be somewhat self-sufficient. We now have hopes that he could succeed after school and into adulthood on his own. If his story and his picture can help spread the word, I hope that many many more can become aware so that more children can be helped sooner and give them the best chance at a successful life.

Early intervention is a major key in Autism.  How blessed this family is to have such a wonderful daycare director, willing to do more than “Just her job!”

April is the month for spring showers that make the air smell so good!  It is also the month for Autism Awareness.

In the month of April, we will be “Focusing on Autism”.  Participating with other photographers all over the country, we have set aside one day to take portraits of children living with ASD.  On Saturday April the 21st we will be giving complimentary 15 minute sessions to those with ASD, AND with that session comes a complimentary 8×10 portrait.   Siblings may be added for an additional fee.  As siblings are added, we will also need to add time to the session.

Autism comes in all different stages and levels.  Special people with special God given talent.  “J” is one of those people.  I first met him was at church.  Our church was doing a promotion on Orphan/Adoption Sunday (2nd Sunday in Nov) and we were featuring all the families who had been blessed by Orphans through Adoption.  One of ‘J’s brothers was a foster child that his family later adopted.  Making their family having a total of 4 boys!  They were a fun group to photograph.  :-)

‘J’ would also come to our Sunday School Class that met at 8.  He would volunteer to pray and say the sweetest prayers.  I could tell that God has touched his little heart and has great plans for ‘J’.

‘J’s mom shares with us ‘J’s story:

‘J’ was diagnosed with high functioning autism at age 7 but I knew something was wrong at 18 months. I had been told that he was just speech delayed and quirky, but he simply didn’t progress like the “experts” thought he would. We are blessed that he has been very responsive to therapies. Autism makes Mr. J the unique and special person he is. It can be hard when you see other kids making fun of him and when there are no birthday party invites, but ‘J’ has made a couple friends the past couple years. All these kids also have social struggles or high functioning autism. His brothers accept him for who he is, but it can be hard because ‘J’ struggles with explosive meltdowns and you don’t always know what may set him off. Plus, he sometimes acts inappropriately in public which can cause some awkwardness. Of course, therapy and many programs are not covered by insurance so it can be a financial strain. Thankfully our credit card companies keep increasing our limits!
There have been times when it has been hard and I have felt alone. His diagnosis came shortly after our move to Alabama so I really didn’t have any close friends here. I did lean on God and the women in my Bible study. However, in the end, no one really understands what it is like unless they have a child who is living ASD as well. Friends who have children on the spectrum have been my greatest support.

‘J’, mom and I had a wonderful time during his session.  He enjoyed feeling special during his photo session.  And excited about being featured in our “Focus on Autism”.  And honestly, I was scared to death when he was climbing around on all this playground equipment, but it did not bother mom one bit.  Then I remembered she has 4 boys!

It was an early spring, cool, overcast afternoon the day of ‘J’s session.   One of his brothers was at a game practice and therefore he did not want photos with his siblings, because there would not be all four of them together….

….however, I think he was secretly enjoying this special time. ;-)

If you have a child living with ASD and would love a complimentary session (15 minutes) to include a  complementary 8×10 portrait of your child, please call us at 205-807-1223.  We will be doing these complimentary sessions on April 21st by appointment only.  Sessions will be held at a local park.  There will be no flashes and it will be a fun non threatening environment.  We would love for you to be willing to share your child’s story as well as we would love to feature your child/family on our blog. This is to be an encouragement to others who are also living with ASD.  If you love the photos that we take, we will make additional photo packages available for purchase.

Family Portraits in the Garden

It has been a busy few months, both in my business life and my personal life.  God is good and we look forward to what He has in store for us in this 2012 year!

I have done a number of maternity sessions (will post more on them later).  And some commercial work (which I love to do and have done little of since becoming a mom 13 years ago!) I will write more about that in a later post as well.  Nonetheless, I have been a terrible blogger these last few months.  I do regularly post to my business Facebook page and those posts will end up as tweets on this blog.  Feel free to “like” my business page where you can see those posts when they are made.

Now on to the good stuff!  Photographs!

I have photographed this family since the daughter was an infant!  I first took their portraits on Baby Dedication Sunday.  At that time, I took infants and family portraits of all the babies & their families who were being dedicated at our church.  They are a real joy to be around!  The dad used to be a reservist and when the mom was expecting the 2nd child (boy), he was called off to Kuwait.  God is good an protected him for the time he was serving in the Middle East.  In fact, the military sent him home for the birth of his son!  The children adore each other.  Such a credit to both their Mom and Dad!

Yes, they are this sweet!

A true blessing to their mom and dad.

Mom loves the ‘Hand Tinted’ look.

This is the image that Mom chose for her wall portrait.  Good choice!

Back in film days, I made ‘Hand Tinted’ of the portraits of the children.

For those of us who love the “Hand-Tinted” look, there are several papers that the                 ’Digital Hand Tints’ look good printed on.

What can I say, boys will be boys and dads come pretty close.  It is really fun to catch moments like these.

He perked up for a few more… LOL!

These last 3 will make a beautiful wall display.  Especially with the large wall portrait of the whole family!

We are currently booking for Spring Portrait Sessions.  Call ASAP to get the time slot that you prefer.  If you would like to be included in our next newsletter email, please fill out the form listed in the beginning of this post.  We are also looking for newborn models!  If you know someone who is expecting or just had a baby, have them call me~205-807-1223.

Have a wonderful & safe weekend!
