Great News!!!

After 20 years of working out of my basement, I am moving into studio space!  EXCITING!  We will be located in the Galleries on John Hawkins Parkway, next to Scandinavian Design and across from the Galleria.  It is a great space, perfect for a photography studio and I am so looking forward to working out of it!

We will still be doing sessions on location and I will upon occasion do a session in my basement.  (Can’t let it go completely!  LOL!)

We have been so busy with the new photography studio and plans I have failed to tell you about our May Promotions.

Birmingham’s Got Talent

There are so many talented youth here in the Birmingham Metro Area! We have had All Stars, Honor Band, School Plays, Show Choir, concerts of all kinds…. Do you have a professionally made portrait of your youth as a reminder of the season or the event!  If your answer is “no”, well now is your chance!  On Friday May 17th we will be having a Birmingham’s Got Talent Portrait Event!  The session fee is $49 and will include our basic keepsake package and a webpic.  So bring your costume, concert gown/tux, uniform, sports equipment, musical instruments or performing props, award metals and trophies!  Show your talent in our Birmingham’s Got Talent Portrait Event!

 

Focus on Autism

There are several causes, organizations and charities that we love and support with our studio through donations, pro bono work and community service.  April is the month for Autism Awareness.  Our studio joins other studios and photographers all over the country in a community service event that we call “Focus on Autism”. We set aside one Saturday in the month of April to take portraits of those living with Autism.  The sessions are complimentary and include an 8×10 to those who participate.

Some Facts About Autism:

  • Recent studies have revealed that 1 in every 80 children have a form of autism
  • One in every 54 boys has autism
  • These figures seem to be on the rise
  •  Autism is a genetic disorder (and still some debate, but most of my clients agree)
  • Children are being diagnosed sooner

We understand the difficulties involved with photographing many of those living with autism and know how to work around them.  This year we are offering the option of photographing not just the child or adult living with autism, but the whole family!  Sessions will be about 20-30 minutes in length and here at our residential studio.  If the weather is agreeable we will have the option of taking portraits in a setting outside.  And we will still have the option of the studio. Many of our Focus on Autism participants allow me to spotlight them on my blog and share their stories.  We hope to do that again this year.  Here are a few links to the blog posts from last years participants. Easter comes early this year!  And here at Images By Missy, we are getting ready! And excited about our Easter Photo Events scheduled during the next few weeks.

The dates for this year’s Rabbit Tales and Bunny Trails are March 14th through March 16th.  And we will have a whole different photography set!  This is a 3 day event that I look forward to doing every year.  I love watching the children play and love on the sweet bunnies.  As I recall, a few parents and grandparents had fun loving on the bunnies & chicks too!  ;-)  I am sure the chicks will be as spunky and entertaining as ever.  As aways, an assortment of exotics.  We will have 2 soft fluffy bunnies as well!

Sessions are by appointment.  Session fee is $69 (that is due at time of booking), with a portion going towards your package selection.

Autism Spotlight Mr. ‘G’ and January Promotions

One of the most wonderful experiences that we had last year was photographing children living with Autism.  We participated with a group of professional photographers from all over the country in Focus on Autism.

We sat aside a day in April (the month we focus on autism awareness) to focus only on those living with Autism.  Each child/person photographed are featured on our blog and will be featured, at some point on a national level.

Handsome Mr. ‘G’ came all happy and full of smiles.  I have never seen a child so happy!!!

In his mother’s words:

“Mr. ‘G’ was born 2 years ago, happy heavy boy.  9 pounds and 5 ounces!!!  WOW!  His first word, “aqua” (Spanish for water) and that was when he was 9 months old.  I was already concerned about the fact that he would not turn or respond when his name was called.  The pediatrician said that it was OK as some kids take more time than others.

He turned 1 year old and was not even crawling.  The doctor said that …”he is a little chubby…”  and that it might take a little longer for him than for other kids.  I told the doctor that I wanted him to be referred to a physical therapy.  At 18 months, Mr. ‘G’ began to walk.  Or rather “waddle”, but still was not talking other then the one word, “aqua”.  He did not point, grunt, make baby or babbling sounds, nothing.  And he still was not responding to the call of his name, clapping, touching, etc. (other means of getting a child’s attention) in any way.

I think God has a mission for me (and family) and my son is teaching me patience.  I was chosen to take care of him and show him the world!  His name, “G….” means “Strength of God”.  Is that a coincidence???  Who can tell!!!???

Our experience with Mr. ‘G’ was wonderful!  A very happy precious little boy who seemed full of wonder.  As typical with many autistic children, unresponsive to any communication.   But we could see excitement and cheerfulness in him.  What a joy he must be to his family!

In conjunction with the American Heart Association’s “Go Red For Women®” we are setting aside 2 days for complimentary portrait sessions for anyone who is wearing RED.  You will receive on digital image and rights to use it on your social networking pages, emails, etc.  If you would like to give a donation to the American Heart Association, that will be welcomed as well.  Print packages will be available for purchase with a portion of the sales going to The American Heart Association.  If you have a story to share, we would love to have it in writing.  I will share it on this blog and pass it onto the American Heart Association as well.  It can be about your mom, grandmother, aunt, sister, daughter or yourself.  Our dates for the Wear Your Red Event will be Thursday Jan 24th & Friday Jan 25th.
